History: several hundred years ago, the world's leading expert in demon exorcism tracked and battled the demon Makiri. A long war was waged, in which the demon hunter and surrounding villages tried to kill Makiri. The demon seemed to be winning, but when it took refuge in a cave to sleep, the brave demon slayer crept in to kill it. Legend has it that after several days of constant fighting with the beast, the warrior was able to sever it's great claw, and the creature retreated. The warrior took the claw back to his people and proclaimed that the beast had been slain, and the villagers made him a king. He kept the claw with him at all times, claiming it was a good luck charm.
Makiri's race, however, can most easily be described as being like an earth worm. If a section of it it cut off, both halves can regrow into complete and individual life forms. With the help of the warrior's body heat, the severed claw was able to regenerate into it's own entity. This new creature remained in it's form and learned from the humans it was constantly around, instead of being reared like any other of it's race. It learned human values and emotions, but came to see how fragile they were in comparison to itself. Out of pity and revere for them, it protected whomever had possession of it to their dying breath.
Unfortunately, humans are also violent, irrational creatures as well as loving and compassionate, and after several encounters with corrupted owners, the creature's naturally vicious nature began to surface. It would tempt it's owners into war and battles, watching safely from the sidelines of a king or queen's neck as it enjoyed the chaos it had caused. In some cases, it would even lead it's owner into death so it would be claimed by the next human. This went on for several generations, where it became known as a cursed item, until it was finally given to the descendant of the warrior who had made it, a priest, to purify.
At first, the necklace caused all manner of horrible things to happen. Buildings would light aflame for no reason, livestock would suddenly die, disease was common. If it had any opportunity for a war, it probably would have started one, but the priest kept the cursed necklace, despite what anyone said, and was even thrown out of their home village for it. They kept it, and prayed for it with undying loyalty to their duty. After a while of this, the necklace started to calm the vicious tendencies of it's race in favor of good-natured gestures, and after a while of living alongside the good priest, it reformed it's entire way of life. For the first time, it took a shape other than the claw, and personally thanked the priest for their benevolent deed. They became good friends, and the creature rededicated itself to protecting the priest's family line.
The priest lived a long, prosperous life with the creature by their side, but as all humans do, they eventually grew old and died. As the creature had promised, it protected the priest's only son, until he too died. Through the years, the creature has protected every descendant of the priest, and has fought against it's violent nature to be kind hearted and good, in honor of the noble priest's memory. To this day, it still keeps it's promise, protecting Alexis Baine, the latest member of the priest's bloodline.
Introduction: Liac dangled from Alex's neck as she walked home from her job. His mind constantly prodding and searching for any ill will toward his newest charge. It was raining heavily, and she turned a corner into an alleyway to take a short cut home. Nothing suspicious. Just mice and alley cats. He heard a call from a long way off, though, and it seemed to be getting nearer. A howling wind picked up and shadows started to crawl around the walls. Liac tensed.
'Makiri. Is that you?'
'of course it's me. Who else would it be?'
Liac didn't like this. He could sense fear, deathly fear, coming toward him.
'are you stalking some innocent soul?'
'yup.'
“Alex.” Liac called. “we shouldn't be here. It's dangerous.”
“it's always dangerous in this city, Liac. It's just something you have to live with.”
Liac could feel the darkness getting closer. Makiri was going all out with this one, and he didn't have a knack for watching out where he swipes his claws. Liac didn't want Alex to be anywhere near his murderous and irresponsible father, and yet, it seemed that they were doomed to run into each other.
“Alex. Please. Can we at least get out of this alley?”
Liac knew Makiri liked to trap his victims before he killed them. The alley would be where he was headed without a doubt.
“what's wrong with the alley? I'm sure I can handle whatever it is.”
Alex obviously had other things on her mind. She would usually take his advice more seriously than this.
A frantic man followed by a blast of fire shot through the alley. Liac had shielded Alex from the flame, but the man wasn't as lucky. He had hit a dead end and was lying on the floor, writhing in pain. Makiri pounced around the corner, smiling madly.
“found you! It seems my fire was too fast, hmm?!?”
He crouched down and smiled as the man continued to scream and twitch. Alex took out her gun and emptied it into the back of Makiri's head.
“what the hell are you doing to that poor man! Get off of him!”
She roundhouse kicked Makiri so hard that he smashed into the brick wall, several feet behind him, and Liac thought he heard snapping bones on impact.
Alex bent over the man, a sad look on her face.
“Liac. Can you heal him?”
“i think so.”
She took the necklace off and placed it on the man's chest. He had stopped moving and was breathing heavily now. Liac assessed the damage, and lamented.
“he's too far gone...i'm sorry, Alex...”
Makiri had healed his wounds by now and was standing over Alex with his claws to the back of her neck.
“Would you like to join your new friend in the eternal abyss? I could arrange for it quite easily..”
Alex showed no fear, but Liac was horrified. He wasn't in contact with her, so he couldn't put up any kind of a shield. For a second, his mind froze, but then he remembered something.
'hey Makiri.'
'what?!?'
Liac smirked and sent out a high pitched sound directly into Makiri's mind. He reeled back in shock and clutched his ears.
“IT WAS YOU THE WHOLE TIME!!!!! YOU WERE THE ONE MAKING THAT FUKING NOISE!!!! I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN!!!! ALL THESE d**nED YEARS!!!!!”
Makiri hissed and sunk into the ground. Liac could still hear him whining, from far off...
“Are you alright, Alex?”
“fine.”
She stood and picked up her necklace. She clasped it firmly in place around her neck and payed her respects to the deceased man. Liac comforted her for her loss all the way home.
